Illness
at School
As specified in the citywide "policies and procedures"
handbook, you should keep your child at home for their own welfare
and for the protection of others, if he or she has:
1. A fever over 100 degrees during the past 24 hours
2. A cold in the active stages
3. A sore throat and/or swollen neck glands
4. An undiagnosed rash or skin eruptions
5. Vomiting or diarrhea within the past 24 hours
6. Head lice that haven't been treated.
School personnel assume responsibility for determining whether
your child should be sent home because of an illness or condition
that begins during school hours. Please do not send your child to
school when you suspect a fever, rash, or other signs of illness.
Since accidents can happen, the school secretary must have at least
three local telephone numbers of friends or neighbors who might
be reached in the event that you are not home in an emergency. These
numbers must be on file in the school office on the emergency information
card.
Medication for Students During School Hours
Every attempt should be made to give your child needed medication
before or after school. If medications must be administered at school
or during authorized field trips, it must be done under direct and
written orders from a licensed physician and with the parent's written
permission. Forms are available in the principal's office for such
requests. Medication must be brought to school in the original container
provided by the pharmacist.
The public health nurse at school, when present, has general and
overall responsibility for the administration of medication and
for the implementation of these procedures. Designated school personnel
will administer certain medications to your child under the supervision
of the school nurse.
Head Lice
Head Lice are a common problem among school children. If
you find that your child has them, please notify the school so that
preventive measures can be taken. If you are unfamiliar with the
problem, please get in touch with the school nurse or the Health
Department, and instructions on how to identify and treat lice will
be given. Children who have been identified as having head lice
are excluded from school until they are treated. Lice checks occur
at school periodically as needed.
Allergies
The Newton school district has formulated an allergy policy and
guidelines. Zervas will work within these guidelines to create a
food allergy policy.
